We left the marina early this morning to take advantage of the tide on the Cape Fear River. The river has a reputation for being rather nasty if you hit it wrong. We followed the book and had favorable wind and tide. We found the buoys and the channel a little (okay, a lot) confusing. The river is used by freighters headed toward the Atlantic and soon we had a container ship bearing down on us. He radioed us and politely asked which side of the the channel we were going to to use. We told him we would take the left and he could pass us on the right. Well, the channel turns and we ended up crossing to the other side of the channel. He came back on the radio and said, "Y'all goin' to have to pick one side or the other, cause I'm comin' up on you fast." Dan apologized for our confusion and told him we would now hug the right side and stay out of his way, which we did.
After what seems like forever, we left North Carolina today and are now in South Carolina.
We continue to see gorgeous homes all along the ICW.
We also see the remains of previous storms.
Tonight we are at Barefoot Resort Marina in North Myrtle Beach with our friends from Heritage and Chances. We decided to get a dock again tonight because the temperature is dropping to near 30 degrees and being at a dock allows us to run our electric heater. The forecast is for warmer weather over the next few days. We expect to make it to Charleston by the weekend.
