This was the sunrise as we prepared to leave. We sailed out of the Pasquotank River and into the Albermarle Sound.
On the way we passed the Coast Guard base. This is the largest CG installation in the United States. This base is the home to the rescue swimmers that were featured in the movie The Perfect Storm. It was from here that crews were dispatched to rescue the survivors from the Bounty which sank off the North Carolina coast during Hurricane Sandy.
We also passed the blimp manufacturing facility. This plant has built all of the blimps in the U.S. except the Goodyear blimps. The building in this picture is enormous.
The Albermarle Sound has a reputation for developing a nasty chop in even modest winds. The day we crossed, it lived up to it's reputation. The wind was from the west at about 15 knots, but the waves were bigger than we would have expected very steep. We had no trouble, and it turned out to be a nice sail down to the Alligator River Bridge where we stopped for the night.
It seemed everyone had the same idea as us, because we counted 13 boats headed in the same direction.
The next morning we left again at sunrise and sailed down the Alligator River. After a long cold day, we stopped and anchored at a place called Slade Creek.
This was a very pretty anchorage that we shared with six other
boats, including our friends on Heritage and Groovin'.
Again we pulled the anchor early with the idea of going to Oriental, NC for the night. As we motored along, we decided it was such a beautiful day we should push on to Morehead City. It turned out to be a 10 hour day on the water, but it was good to put some miles behind us and make further progress south. It is getting cold and the last few nights have been in the low thirties. We are feeling the need to get into warmer weather.
On the way we saw a bunch of pelicans and we are still trying to get a good picture of one.
